Week 5: Post 1

The two websites I have chosen to compare are the Chili’s website and the Teri Cafe website. These two businesses both specialize in food however, they serve two very different target markets. Chili’s has locations all over the United States and they are aiming to reach the typical American consumer. They serve all types of food and even the pickiest of eaters can find something to eat at their locations. Teri Cafe is a local business who is aiming to reach Oceanside locals who enjoy sea food. They only offer Japanese cuisine and stick to their roots. When looking at the homepage of both of these sites you can automatically spot the two differences. Chili’s website is universal since they have many locations. However, Teri Cafe’s site is more personalized by showing footage of their actual location and the customers they serve. On the Teri Cafe site you can even learn about the family who owns the location. When looking at the Chili’s site you would have no idea who owns it, from looking at their site. One subtle difference I noticed was that Teri Cafe offers Specials rather than a rewards system, like Chili’s does. These may seem like a similar concept however, by using the verbiage of “specials” it shows that Teri Cafe is more of a locally owned business. I think that there can be crossover between the two types of customers. While Chili’s offers a wide array of food and Teri Cafe offers mainly Japanese food, Teri Cafe also offers more mild forms of food. Along with unique food such as sushi and fish plates, they also offer ramen and teriyaki bowls which remain distinctly Japanese, but not as obscure as eating items such as octopus. From looking at Chili’s website, it is clear that their target audience is people who want to sit down to a meal and have drinks on a Friday night. Teri Cafe’s target audience is more specialized and their goal is to provide quality quick service, rather than a longer sit down meal. The tone of Chili’s website is culturally neutral and the Teri Cafe site remains true to the culture. One can infer that the call to action on the Teri Cafe site would be to support a small business and at Chlii’s the call to action is to enjoy a sit down dinner at a reasonable price. The overall message of Chili’s is to relax and take it easy and at Teri Cafe it is to enjoy a quality fast casual meal.
